It’s no secret that everyone loves Fall-whether you love it for the slight chill in the air, the smell of the oncoming winter, the wonderful and fun-filled holidays, or the brightly colored leaves, everyone can find something to enjoy about the months of Fall. And if you plant a red maple tree or two in your yard or garden, you’ll find plenty of colorful reasons to love fall.
The red maple tree is one of the favorites of gardeners and tree planters in the United States because it is a quickly maturing tree that provides a dense shade and also offers some of the most brilliant reds, purples, oranges and yellows that Fall has ever seen.
Certain varieties of this tree are colored in the fall colors during the warm summer months and the months of spring and display yet another Fall color during the months of Fall, just before Winter. This is one of the most encouraging and beautiful displays of color and life that can be found in a deciduous tree. But because the tree is deciduous, you will not be able to enjoy the foliage year round. Like so many other trees, maples will lose their leaves in the winter and will bud again with new leaves in the early spring.
This tree is also one of the most adaptable trees in the United States, with many varieties capable of surviving and thriving in nearly every growing zone. Most of the trees in this species are drought tolerant, are insect and disease resistant and are low maintenance. Some will even grow in the shade, and others still are considered to be some of the easiest trees to grow. The trees are hardy and will adapt to every soil type, wherever you choose to plant them.
An interesting feature of the red maple tree that many people do not realize is that some varieties actually bear a small red fruit. These trees will flower from late March through early April-an mystifyingly short flowering time-and will begin to produce the small red fruit in the early summer. In addition to red leaves (whether it is in the summer or fall), these trees also have twigs and stems that appear to be red as well.
In addition to its fruit-bearing abilities, this tree’s sap can be used to make sugar, though it will not be of the same quality as sugar made from the sap of a sugar maple tree.
The red maple tree is able to be crossed with other maple trees to create incredible hybrids which produce not only fruit but also leaves in a wide array of colors. These hybrids are some of the most amazing spectacles in the tree world.
Remember, if you are searching for an easy to manage and easy to grow tree that will make your house the envy of the neighborhood, you simply can’t go wrong with a red maple tree-whether you choose a traditional fiery red, a hybrid, or one of the many other available colors, you’ll fall in love with the colors of Fall all year round.
