Cantilever umbrellas are a type of offset patio umbrella. Generally speaking, a cantilever umbrella will have a canopy supported with a beam that has a gentle curve, adding a little bit of extra style to the design. These umbrellas are sold with a freestanding base, so you can set one wherever you want it in your backyard. Because the base has to support the whole umbrella it is usually quite heavy, and many models require weights placed on the base to further reduce the chance of the umbrella toppling. Because of this you probably will not move the umbrella around too often, but the design of a cantilever umbrella – namely, the fact that the canopy can be moved independently of the base – allows for maximum shade potential without needing to be relocated.
Low-end Cantilever Umbrellas
As with other umbrellas, the size of a cantilever umbrella’s canopy is one of the major determining factors in the price. Other factors are the stand and canopy materials, the specific features of the umbrella, and of course the level of quality in its construction. The least expensive canopy umbrellas can be purchased for under $100, but there are risks associated with the quality of these umbrellas. They might be made of materials that will not last in the long term, particular if they are exposed to harsh weather conditions. Risks include the fading of the canopy color and the breaking down of the operating mechanisms.
Mid-range Umbrellas
Moving up from the ultra-cheap umbrella models are the mid-range options. These are a little pricier, costing up to around $300. But with this price increase almost always comes an increase in quality as well, meaning these umbrellas are usually a far better investment. You can often find up to a 10′ canopy in the $300-and-less range, and occasionally even a 11′ as well. You also have more to choose from as far as design than with the cheaper models.
High-end Umbrellas
The biggest and most expensive cantilever umbrellas are typically purchased for commercial use, since the price makes them too far out of budget for the average homeowner. And they are expensive, often more than $500, or even more than $1000. Unless you have a giant area you use for entertaining and have the money to spend, the mid-range umbrellas are probably a better choice.
Regardless of the amount you want to spend on your umbrella, it is always a good idea to get the opinions of other consumers who have already purchased a model you are interested in. That is the best way to find out if the umbrella lives up to any quality claims that the manufacturer has made.
