Fireplaces have been a central part of the home for as long as anyone can remember. Even modern day families make it a point to include a fireplace when they build a new home. People looking to buy a new house almost always make sure that it includes a fireplace. This fixture is something that brings incomparable comfort and beauty to a home.
Fireplaces are not a one-size-fits-all deal, however. There are countless designs that can be created, and the perfect fireplace ultimately depends on the preferences and needs of the person. Even if you are buying an existing house with a fireplace, it does not mean that you have to take it as it is! You can play around with the fireplace design and come up with one that will give you utmost pleasure for years to come.
You can choose from a plethora of fireplace designs. Perhaps the two major types of fireplaces are the wood fireplace and the gas fireplace. The wood fireplace is the classic kind – the type that our ancestors used in their homes. It gives off a wonderful scent, and provides comfort in more ways than one. However, the downside to owing a wood fireplace is that you would have to exert a little more effort to come up with the wood for burning. You might opt to spend time chopping up wood for the fireplace, or you may go to the store to buy wood ready for burning. Another downside is that wood fireplaces emit smoke. There is no going around it. If anyone in your family cannot tolerate smoke, then a wood fireplace may not be for you. The gas fireplace, on the other hand, is cleaner and more convenient than the wood fireplace. As it does not use wood for burning, there is no smoke emitted. This makes for a cleaner environment. It also does away with the need to chop or buy wood. The ambiance, however, may not be as cozy and traditional as the wood fireplace.
People often think that fireplaces are meant to be used only indoors. This is a common misconception, however. The fact is, however, that outdoor fireplaces can give you just as much pleasure – maybe even more. If you enjoy spending time outdoors and not cooped in the house, then an outdoor fireplace is the best choice for you.
There are many outdoor fireplace designs to choose from. You may opt to go with a stone outdoor fireplace or perhaps you prefer brick. No matter what kind of material you decide to go with, you have to make sure that the laws in your area allow for the installation and use of outdoor fireplaces. You wouldn’t want to have that wonderful fixture in your backyard and not be able to use it!
Outdoor fireplace designs give you more flexibility. In reality, your creativity is the limit. From stone to brick, from enclosed outdoor fireplaces to open pit fire – the sky’s the limit! The bottom line is that you make sure you know what you want before you go ahead and build that outdoor fireplace.
