Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai Tree

Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai Tree

Most bonsai trees will have a single well defined trunk, with well delineated branch structures. The Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai is an exception to that rule. This plant, which is native to Malaysia, has what appears to be multiple trunks that are closely grouped together. The leaves of the Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai are very thick, green in color and shaped to resemble Umbrellas, thus the name.

Being a member of the “tropical” species of bonsai trees, the Hawaiian Umbrella bonsai should be grown as an indoor tree unless you live in one of the tropical regions of the world. This tree prospers well when placed in a sunny window, but out of direct sunlight.

This tree produces bright red blossoms in the spring time, which is a nice contrast to the green leaves of the tree. While being quite beautiful, this tree can be dangerous. The leaves and flowers are very poisonous and should be kept away from small children and pets that like to nibble.

The amount of water that the Hawaiian Umbrella bonsai requires is really dependent on the amount of sunlight it receives. An average Hawaiian Bonsai requires watering every two to three days, but prudent checking in between watering is recommended. You should never allow the soil of this tree to totally dry out. An indicator of too much watering is the appearance of black leaves.

Pruning should be done as new growth appears, as this tree wants to grow beyond the confines of a the miniature bonsai. Pinching off of new leaves is recommended over the use of cutters. The Hawaiian Umbrella does not require wiring as part of its growth and training.

This tree should be repotted as often as the tree out grows its current pot. After repotting do not apply any fertilizer for 3-4 weeks.

You should inspect this tree often for insect infestation. Spider mites are a common pest found on this species. These will appear as small moving red pin points on the branches and leaves of the tree. Treat the tree with insecticides and fungicides that are in the form of a soapy spray or systemic poisons. Do not spray or treat the treat when the soil is dry.

While not being one of the most beautiful species, this is a very easy Bonsai tree to grow.
