If you are looking at iron umbrella stands you may be surprised with the amount of choice available. Most people assume that it was only the Victorians who used iron for their garden furniture but it also appears in American and French styles. It is probably the fact that it was once very plentiful and relatively easy to make especially during the industrial revolution. You can buy small or large ones depending on the space you have available.
You can use iron umbrella stands both indoors and out. They do tend to be used for storing umbrellas as they are not particularly suitable for freshly cut flowers. The stands tend to have intricate carving which looks beautiful but means that they are not waterproof. This can be an issue with this style of umbrella stands as you can often find a pool of water on your hall floor when a ceramic stand would have contained the leaks from wet umbrellas.
If you are going to use the iron umbrella stands outdoors you will need to make sure they are protected against rust. In fact it is a good idea to protect the indoor ones too as the water from wet umbrellas can cause problems. Always paint the rust protectant on by hand as otherwise you can miss the crevices the carvings create. This means that you leave weak spots for rust to attack and you will have to strip this back and repaint the item again in the near future.
Some people use these stands to hold magazines or newspapers as they are so ornate. They have also appeared in bedrooms where they are used to hold small items. Despite being designed to be used to hold an umbrella, it really is up to you where you want to put iron umbrella stands and what you use them for.
