Do you have a garden which leaves little to the imagination? No focal point, nowhere for climbing plants? Not even a change of level? A Garden Arbor can help.
Garden Arbors can have so many uses: as a transitional walk-through to separate the kids’ play area from more formal areas of the garden or the recycle area. As a support for climbing plants; clematis, wisteria and roses look superb climbing over a Garden Arbor. For the wine lovers, a grape arbor is perfect! You could even use one in the front yard as a walk-through up to the front door.
If you have a corner of the garden which is not in use, a seated Arbor will allow you to watch the birds and butterflies, or while away a quiet hour with a good book; when that becomes too strenuous, just doze in the sun…or pick a few of those grapes!
You will need to decide whether to paint or preserve your arbor. A white painted arbor will look splendid if attached to an existing white painted fence, such as in the Colonial style, and surrounded by appropriate planting. This may not be the best treatment for a freestanding seated arbor in more urban surroundings. Wood preservative or varnish really comes into its own on natural wood. A choice of stain from light oak through to dark mahogany, or simply a clear varnish to bring out the natural hues of the wood and the whole garden has been transformed forever.
You can find Garden Arbors in home improvement stores or garden centers, but making your own is much more rewarding. Copy a photograph you see in a magazine or book, or take measurements from one you like, or find a helpful video from your local home improvement store.
